Geetinatya:presenting stories in song

Geetinatya or “lyrical Play” is one of the oldest modes of performing arts in Orissa. Historians opine that this form of entertainment was prevalent in Orissa from the times of Emperor Kharavela in 1st century A.D. They contend that the Ranigumpha cave of Khandagiri was an arena that was used to stage plays. Many folk forms have thus developed from then. Geetinatya is one of them.

Each folk form had its particular community, same language, area and way of life.Abhinaya is a major part of these art forms along with the lyrical dialogues. Use of musical instruments like mridanga, harmonium and cymbals are done with an intention to give subtle touch to the high sounding lyrical dialogues. The dialogues that are used are purposefully lyrical. Songs are still interspersed in between at regular intervals to make the entire thing more musical at the same time taking care of emotional moods like love, sorrow and pathos.
